Summary
This paper reviews ten free software applications for viewing the cosmos through your computer. Although commercial astronomy software such as Starry Night and Slooh make for excellent viewing of the heavens, they come at a price. Fortunately, there is astronomy software that is not only excellent but also free. In this article I provide a brief overview of ten popular free Desktop Planetarium software programs available for your desktop computer.

Another Planetarium programme that deserves an honourable mention is Cartes
du Ciel. Not only does it allow you full planetarium functions it also
allows you to control your telescope remotely. An additional feature allows
you to download a real image of an area of the sky from the DSS or similar
to compare with your observations. The older version also does satellite,
comet and asteroid predictions. There are a large number of free
catalogues and a utility to create your own. Recommended
